Egypt Cancels the Gas Deal with the Zionists

I remembered, as I listened to the announcer heralding the cancellation of the gas agreement between Egypt and the Zionist entity, Abdel Ghani el-Gamasy shaking hands with the Israeli chief of staff in the tent at Kilometer 101 in Sinai. That day was bitter, filled with humiliation and disgrace, and I watched the Arab nation kneel, submissive and humbled, before a small statelet of savage invaders. Great Egypt shrank that day at the feet of dwarfs.

In any case, this is a great and significant step, but we must proceed cautiously and hope. The step rests on a legal, commercial rationale, and has not taken on a political dimension. Is the decision purely commercial, one that could be revisited later if the legal violation is remedied? We must wait and see. Of course, there is no harm in dressing up a political decision in legal justification or commercial contracts, and no harm in Egyptian officials seeking ways other than direct confrontation to rid themselves of Egypt’s obligations toward the Zionist entity, especially since Egypt needs a period of calm to set its internal affairs in order. But what matters is that Egypt holds firm to its decisions and does not retreat from them.

The masses of the nation are, for the most part, happy with this decision, and hopeful that Egypt will return to its position of leading the nation and advancing it in various fields of life. There are those who resent this step, but no nation is free of those who tarnish its history.
